The Curious Case of the Unwonked Ears

My longtime followers know that I've had "ear issues" from the time I joined my Family at the tender age of 8 weeks old. My ears started to turn wonky (a.ka. "flyaway", a.k.a. "rosebud"). Remember this unfortunate picture (altho' I do look rather cute, if I may say so myself)?

This is not an uncommon occurence in Tollers, so my human followed the breeder's instructions for putting ear weights on the insides of my ear flaps to make the cartiledge grow the right way. I went through several sessions of ear weights, including a rather painful one when I got an infection. At that point, my human decided enough was enough, better to have a healthy wonky-eared dog than an unhealthy one with "proper" drop ears.

So, you all have known me (and loved me, thank you!) by this look:

Well, the strangest thing has happened. Over the past week, my ears started to drop on their own. Sometimes just one, sometimes both, and then they'd flip backward again. My human had read about another Toller owner who had massaged her dog's ears at the crease, so she started to do that. And lo and behold, now my ears are staying down on their own, more than they are flipping back:

Maybe I had an ear growth spurt, or maybe the Man Upstairs was trying to teach the Control Freak (oops, I mean, my human) a lesson about letting go, and things will fall into place--even ears!

What do you think of my new look?

  1. Hi Sedona,

I think erect ears are the only kind to have, but your dropped ears are adorable too. Banjo has lazy ears. One up, one down. And mom would not have him any other way.

  4. Wooos! The wonky ears were cute, but the Dog Upstairs knows what is best, not the breeders or the Moms.... You are adorable no matter what type of ears you have!

  6. Hi Sedona,
You're ears are a-ok for us. We love you the way you are. Mocha has confused ears too (one side is up and the other down) Mommy is just waiting how it would turn out as she grows up.

    Happy week for you there!

  7. Oh Sedona pal! We LOVE your ears. No more weights ok? That didn't sound too fun.

Ps...I didn't get to swim free like Sammie at the Art Bark. Mom is still quite a nervous nelly...but I did get to have more freedom with dad around!! Woowee!

  8. Dear Sierra,

We think your ears looked adorable before but we are glad they are doen the way you like them. But another way to bring them down is to wear heavy ear-rings. Kind of painful, but it works and you'll look cool.

Riley, who made you a fashion expert? Dr. know it all! Don't mind him, he's silly!

  9. Sierra, your ears are super pawsomely adowable. My momster feels your mommy's pain about the ears. I had one upright ear and one floppy ear. The floppy ear started standing up, but then a dog nipped me on the ear and it fell back down. Eventually the ear came back up and as soon as that happened, I got ear infection and the ear flopped back down. It was driving my momster nuts (BOL!!!) but eventually, the floppy ear came back up. I think our ears taught our pawrents the value of patience and "no meddling with nature" rule!

  22. German Shepherd Dog ears can be a big worry to their PAWrents, too, but you get what you get in the end and love what you got in the beginning!

  24. oooh, that's WAY cool - the thought that your ears may have taught your human a thing or two about letting go and letting the man upstairs work his magic!
your ears were CUTE before, and now they (and you) look ELEGANT!

my human massaged my ears as well, and now they stay were they're "supposed" to be at all times, except when i'm REALLY tired (like after tacking training session) - then they are all wonky for a little while!

    your friend,

    sienna
